Darwin has a great coastline. Many tourists visit Darwin in the Northern Territory and make beautiful hikes or cycle tours along the coast. And the locals too. After 2 years of living in Darwin we already have our favourite beaches and places. Discover the most beautiful places along the coast of Darwin now.
Casuarina Beach
We regularly get on a bike or take the car to visit Casuarina beach. This beach is a good place for a fresh walk with your dog. There’s a part where dogs can off the leash.
Casuarina Coastal Reserve is more than just a beach. There are good cycle paths: you can ride from Casuarina Beach all the way to Nightcliff. Nearby the beach you will find De La Plage. A cozy beach cafe and a very nice place on the beach to have coffee or lunch. It’s a very popular place in Darwin, especially at the weekend.
East Point Reserve
Don’t miss East Point Reserve when you’re in Darwin. This place is nice to visit for 2 reasons. One: the coastline at East Point is amazing! Idyllic bays filled with rugged rocks and surrounded by an oasis of green. This place surprise me every time.
The second reason to visit East Point Reserve is because of the beautiful wildlife. We’ve been here 3 times now, and all times we saw a lot of Wallabies and other tropical animals like birds and lizards.
Tip: when you visiting Darwin (and East Point in special) in October or November you can enjoy these wonderful red blossom trees (see photo below)
Fannie Bay
Not far away from East Point Reserve is located Fannie Bay. Another wonderful area in Darwin to make a walk or have a picnic along the coast. Fannie Bay is the perfect location to spot a spectacular sunset in the evening.
In the dry season you can spot many sailboats in azure blue water and the fishermen on the coast. It looks like a postcard, so don’t forget to bring your camera ;)
There are picnic tables to have a lunch and enjoy the great view. Fannie Bay is a great place with a good atmosphere. Fannie Bay can be combined with a visit to East Point Reserve.
Nightcliff
Nightcliff is perhaps Darwin’s most popular spot, apart from the city itself. Many locals and tourists come to Nightcliff to enjoy the nature and amazing coastal line. Nightcliff is the place to be for cyclists, hikers and runners.
Many Australians going to Nightcliff to enjoy the day with their esky (cool box) filled with tasty snacks. Families sitting on camping chairs and having a BBQ at the public BBQ places.
Nightcliff is another photogenic place and a perfect place to spot tropical birds and reptiles.
Dripstone Cliffs
Another great place to visit in Darwin is Dripstone Cliffs, a bit further south then Casuarina Beach. We found a place in the shade (it’s always sunny and warm in Darwin) and enjoyed the sounds of the sea and birds around us. Here we had a beautiful view of the beach. Especially in the morning and early in the evening you can see many Australians walking on the beach with their dogs.
