Each year, around one million people gather around Sydney Harbour to celebrate NYE. That sounds overwhelming, but the city manages it extremely well. There are more than 40 official vantage points spread across the harbour, each equipped with facilities such as toilets, food stalls and security.
What time do the fireworks start?
There are two fireworks shows on New Year’s Eve:
9:00 PM (local time) – The family fireworks
A smaller show designed for families so children don’t have to stay up until midnight. It may sound modest, but it is already very impressive.
12:00 AM (midnight, local time) – The main show
This is the world-famous display launched from both the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. It lasts around 12–15 minutes and is absolutely breathtaking.
The best viewing spots for New Year’s Eve in Sydney
This is the question everyone asks: where is the best place to watch the NYE fireworks in Sydney?
There are free viewing areas and paid events — both have their own advantages.
Cremorne Point (my personal favourite)
This is the spot I personally visited twice, and I can wholeheartedly recommend it. Cremorne Point is located across the harbour and is accessible by ferry from Circular Quay (around 15 minutes).
The view of both the Opera House and Harbour Bridge is absolutely phenomenal.
What makes this place special is the atmosphere. You’ll be surrounded by locals and travellers of all ages. During the day, people play cards, swim in the nearby outdoor pool, and enjoy food and drinks — the long waiting hours simply fly by.

- Capacity: around 7,000 people
- Free entry

Mrs Macquaries Point
Mrs Macquaries Point is one of the most famous NYE viewing locations in Sydney. Located in the Royal Botanic Garden, it offers a panoramic, unobstructed view of both the Harbour Bridge and Opera House — and it’s one of the most photographed spots in the city on New Year’s Eve.
From Circular Quay, it’s about a 20-minute walk along the harbour — a beautiful walk in itself.
The downside? Everyone knows it. It’s consistently one of the first locations to fill up. In my experience living in Sydney, people often arrive before sunrise to secure a good spot. If you want a front-row view, arriving before 7:00 AM is not an exaggeration.

How early should you arrive?
This is probably the most important tip: arrive early. Very early.
In 2008, we arrived at Cremorne Point around 9:00 AM, and even then, we’d left home at 6:00 AM to make it in time.
In 2016, arriving around 11:00 AM still worked, but by the afternoon most good spots were gone.
Recommended arrival time:
- Between 9:00–11:00 AM for popular free locations
Bring a cooler, food, sunscreen, a hat, and something to keep you entertained. The waiting time is long, but the atmosphere makes it all part of the experience.
When should you book your hotel?
New Year’s Eve in Sydney is the busiest time of the year, and everything sells out quickly.

Accommodation becomes very expensive during NYE. Staying near Circular Quay or the CBD is ideal for transport, but also the most expensive option.

My favourite hotel: No 9 Springfield (Kings Cross)
I personally stayed at No 9 Springfield in Kings Cross, and it was an excellent choice. It’s affordable, just a two-minute walk from the train station, and surrounded by great cafés and restaurants. The room was clean and the bed comfortable. The only downside is the small bathroom — but overall, it’s one of the best value options in Sydney.
