Ellis Beach: sleeping on a tropical beach

We knew in advance that we would be visiting many different beaches during our Queensland trip in Australia. It would be a varied trip, alternating between rainforest, cities, beaches and islands. After our special stay in the middle of the rainforest in Daintree National Park (Cape Tribulation) we drove further south to Cairns, to spend the night at Ellis Beach near Palm Cove. Discover what to do in Ellis Beach in Australia.

About Ellis Beach

Ellis Beach is one of those places to choose for a stopover. We only stayed one night there and that was fine for this North Queensland trip. But I could have stayed there for a couple of nights, because sleeping near the beach is always great.

Enjoying the sound of the sea

Ellis Beach itself is small place. You have cottages, a beautiful coastal strip and within walking distance a restaurant where you can have breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you are looking for a bit more activity you can visit Palm Cove. Here you will find more restaurants and shops. Ellis Beach is ideal for people who want to relax. Read a book, take a dip in the sea and enjoy the silence and the nature.

Ellis Beach Oceanfront Bungalows

We slept in a bungalow of Ellis Beach Oceanfront Bungalows right on the waterfront. The bungalow was simply furnished but looked neat and clean and had everything we needed.

A big advantage of these cottages was the veranda at the front, where you can sit outside (covered) and enjoy the sound of the ocean. In the evening we had some thunderstorms but we still could sit outside.

Safe swimming

As I described earlier on Travel Guide Australia, swimming in the sea during the rainy season is not wise in North Queensland. This is because of the dangerous stingers. If they sting you, there is a chance you will become very ill and in the worst case you may even die.

The Beach

Those who still want to dive safely can swim between the nets. At Ellis Beach, the government has placed nets in the water to keep animals such as stingers away. I would definitely recommend taking a dip in the water, because the water is very pleasant and from the water you have a beautiful view of the green mountains.

Ellis Beach Bar & Grill

For eating out, there is not much choice in the area. There is only Ellis Beach Bar & Grill, but this place is really great!

Breakfast at Ellis Beach Bar & Grill

The kitchen is very good and the atmosphere is nice too. And how nice it is to walk from you bungalow in 2 minutes to this restaurant. This Bar & Grill is located on the coast, so you have a beautiful view of the sea during breakfast and dinner.
