About a 4.5-hour drive north of Sydney and a little under six hours south of Brisbane lies Port Macquarie. It’s a small, quiet town on the Pacific coast at the mouth of the Hastings River in New South Wales. Port Macquarie has a population of around 55,000 people, and the average age is around 49, indicating a somewhat older population. The town is also relatively far from major cities like Sydney and Brisbane, to allow it to serve as a satellite town for those working in those cities, but for retirees, it’s a true paradise on the mid-north/east coast of NSW.
Town Beach Motor Inn
On our road trip from Sydney to Brisbane, we passed through Port Macquarie and decided to stay overnight. We stayed with our dog at the Town Beach Motor Inn – Port Macquarie Motel. The motel is very centrally located and there was ample parking on the property.

We received a very friendly welcome from the receptionist and were able to check in immediately. The room was spacious and had a small balcony where we enjoyed a delicious coffee and breakfast. We were able to easily walk our dog in the street next to the motel, where there was a large green space and we were not bothered by heavy traffic.

The motel also had a swimming pool and a central garden with seating, which we didn’t use due to time constraints, but everything looked well-maintained. It was a very comfortable stay, and we would definitely return if we ever visit Port Macquarie again.
Town Beach
From our motel, we walked to Town Beach in just 5 minutes. It’s a large beach with lovely walking paths, including the famous Breakwall Walking Path, marked by rocks painted by various artists. There are also several places to sit or relax, and playgrounds for the children. There were some big waves crashing in from the sea when we were in Port Macquarie, creating a beautiful spectacle as they created a strong splash on the rocks.
Tip: Here’s a tip for beach lovers in Australia! 🌞 Tesalate beach towels from are a game-changer. They’re ultra‑absorbent, quick‑dry, and sand‑free, ideal for Australia’s sunny beaches. The sand brushes off easily, and the warm sun dries the beach towels fast. Lightweight and stylish, we are fan!

Dining at Bowls Club
Also less than 5 minutes from our motel, we found the local Bowls club (a popular Australian sport, especially among older people, resembling oversized Boules, but with balls whose center of gravity isn’t exactly in the center, causing them to curve). This bowls club had several restaurants, and it was very busy, which is usually a sign that the food is good. We enjoyed a delicious Chicken Boscaiola Schnitzel there.
Miners Beach Walking Track
Port Macquarie is also known for its stunning coastline and beautiful walking trails with diverse wildlife to spot. You can spot large goannas, among other animals. We went to Shelly Beach the afternoon we arrived, because goannas can be spotted there and there’s a lovely walking trail called the Miners Beach Walking Track.

The route follows the coast, partly through wooded hills and partly on the beach, and most of it is well-maintained and easy to walk. The beach sections are a bit trickier here and there, as you have to walk over rocks to continue the route. Unfortunately, we didn’t spot the large goannas this time, but we were delighted with the beautiful views and the idyllic nature of the walk. Read more about this coastal walking trail here

The next morning we quickly grabbed breakfast at the local supermarket in the town center and saw that the town actually has a nice center with great shops, restaurants, and pubs.
Since we haven’t spotted the giant goannas yet, we have a good reason to return to Port Macquarie, as the town itself and the coastline are definitely worth visiting again.
