The Albany area in Western Australia had been on my list for a while. As I love hiking and being in nature, this area really interested me. Indeed, the Albany area is a very good place to do adventurous hikes and enjoy the most beautiful views. Choosing a hike was quite difficult, as the range is very large. In the end, we chose for the Uredale Point (fmr Point Possession) Heritage trail , a stunning 5-km hike where you walk through beautiful nature, have many breathtaking views and walk on one of the whitest beaches in Australia. Read my experience and watch the atmospheric photos now.

Starting point
From our hotel Best Western Albany Motel & Apartments, it was a 20-minute drive to the start of the trail. The closer we got to the starting point, the more beautiful the scenery became. As with other trails, you can park your car neatly at the starting point. The temperature was 18 degrees this morning and the snakes in the area were coming out of hibernation, we had decided to put on long trousers.
Stunning views and white beaches
Once we have covered the first few hundred metres, we can actually see how special this trail is. After a small climb, we already have a stunning view of the coast, with white beaches and azure waters playing a big part. Wow, how beautiful it is here… and we have only just started!
One of the striking things are the many flowers we spot. Could it be because of the season, or is this area always so colourful? As in other places in Australia, chatting with locals is easy. We met a very friendly Australian couple walking their dogs. During this nice conversation, they told us that this area is known for its many flowers. Different plants bloom in every season, so it’s not necessarily seasonal like in the Netherlands, for instance.
When we have a fair bit on it, we arrive at a special point. From the hill, we look onto a natural bridge of green and white beaches. Because there is a strong wind, the sea is rough, giving beautiful waves in the water and on the beach. This view does represent one of the highlights of this hike!
Not only from the hills is this a magnificent hike, even as we approach the beach we notice how special this environment is. The strong wind makes the sand fly around our ears, but that should not spoil the fun. The bright white sand tries to blind us, but we definitely see how picture-perfect this place is. We walk across the beach to continue the hike. With every step we take, you can hear the sand squeezing together which makes a funny sound.
A variety hike
What I like about the Uredale Point Heritage Trail is the variety you have. There are paths through nature, paths over hills with fantastic views and parts where you walk on the beach. So we were just on a dazzling white beach and now we are already walking on another hill where we enjoy another stunning view.
The last beach we pass is a special one. This is because the white sand has given way to seaweed, which lies in large piles on the beach. On this beach, try to walk around the sand as much as possible. This is because walking on the seaweed can cause you to sink and feel as if you are walking on quicksand. Therefore, watch where you walk carefully so that you are not suddenly up to your knees in the seaweed.
When we walk the last part of the hike, we think we are already fulfilled and no more new spots to spot. But nothing could be further from the truth! It was precisely during the last part of the hike that I got excited. When we walk a little higher again, we look at another stretch of coastline, but this time even more heavenly than we had already seen. Beautiful rocks lie in the water with the sea lapping against them, and then that too-white sand and those green hills in the background. What a paradise!!
The Uredale Point Heritage Trail is actually very rewarding from its starting point to its finishing point. If you love hiking and your heart beats faster with paradisiacal beaches, beautiful flowers and breathtaking views, this trail near Albany is not to be missed. Whether it is the most beautiful trail in the area I dare not say, I personally think the whole area is beautiful. But if you want a not-too-long hike and still want to explore a large part of the area, the Uredale Point Heritage Trail is highly recommended!!!
